Sweet Corn Arrives from Manheim Fields
Summer’s here, and so is sweet corn at the Emporium. Tom Maurer has the first of the season’s corn, from the Glick farm in Manheim, on hand Friday and Saturday. Some area cornfields, unfortunately, suffered damage in the sudden wind, rain and hail storm Tuesday afternoon. But the Glicks were unscathed. Let the crunching begin!
The season’s over for fresh cherries, but Tom has apricots available, along with black and orange raspberries (from southern Lancaster County) and the first apples of the season (the green variety, from the Eli- Gingrich orchards near the Emporium). He’s also got red currants, great for making currant jelly, that tart “generic” jelly in good jelly doughnuts. You cook and strain the currants to separate the seeds from the juice, thicken the juice and proceed to make jelly.
There are also yellow, purple and green string beans, early small but sweet plums, celery, carrots, new red potatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers, squash and big honey (spring) onions, red beets and lettuce hearts. Local hothouse-grown tomatoes continue on hand, with field-grown ones soon to be available.
Remember, the Emporium offers only produce in season – meaning that you can count on it being fresh and locally grown.
